Sirens vs Amazons is a new opera by the same composer as last year's fan favorite Meow and Forever. Tropical, fresh, funny, and filled with queer romance. Just the way we like it for our Pride Month Double-Bill!! Follow the Siren Sisters as they lure men to their crunchy demise... until a boat of Amazon women show up! Throw in a handful of Greek gods, and it's a party.
Set on an idyllic island in the mid 1800s, our production of The Isle of Tulipatan by Jacques Offenbach gets an updated English libretto by Bridget Johnston. We're making it naughtier and queerer, with even more gender-bending fun. Celebrate pride and freedom of expression with this delightfully French one-act.

Building on the incredible success of our sold-out 2025 Pride Month debut, Thousand Bridges Opera is thrilled to return to the Margaret Partee Performing Arts Center for another "delightfully queer" weekend of music and community. We are continuing our mission to provide accessible live entertainment and celebrate historically marginalized artists in the Pittsburgh area.
Are both operas performed both nights? Yes! Both Sirens vs Amazons and The Isle of Tulipatan will be performed on Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13, 2026.
How long is the event? The event features two one-act operas with an intermission held between the performances.
What languages will these operas be performed in? In keeping with our mission of accessibility, both operas will be performed entirely in English. The Isle of Tulipatan is originally composed and French. This performance features a brand new translation by Thousand Bridges Opera co-founder Bridget Johnston.

What is Sirens vs Amazons about? This world premiere Opera by Jodi Goble is a sapphic romantic comedy set on a remote island. Who is performing in Sirens vs Amazons? Like its companion piece, Sirens vs Amazons is performed by our stellar local professional cast. Soprano Leah Huber as Athena, baritone Ivan Plazacic as Ares, and of course, Hayden Keefer, bass, as the King of the gods- ZEUS. The Siren Sisters will be Elizabeth Camele, soprano; Sarah Austin, mezzo-soprano; and Wallis Lucas, soprano. The Amazons will be Alessandra Gabbianelli, soprano; Alicia Jayourba, soprano; and Bridget Johnston, mezzo-soprano. Who is Jodi Goble? Jodi Goble is an award-winning composer and Full Teaching Professor in Voice at Iowa State University. She is also the composer of Meow and Forever, which you may remember from last year’s successful Pride double-bill. Her character-driven music has been featured on NPR and recognized by the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
What is The Isle of Tulipatan about? Set on a remote island, this hilarious new genderqueer English adaptation follows two families who are forced to reconsider their long-held beliefs about gender identity. It is a celebration of discovery and queer joy. This opera is written by 19th century French composer, Jacques Offenbach. This production will feature TBO co-founder Bridget Johnston and features her own brand-new translation of the work.
Who is Jacques Offenbach? Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and impresario remembered for his nearly 100 operettas. Famous for his facility for melody and "risqué humor," he is the creator of the iconic can-can from Orpheus in the Underworld. This year, we are presenting a brand-new adaptation of his 1868 work, The Isle of Tulipatan.
Who is performing in The Isle of Tulipatan? The production features a talented, all-local cast of professional musicians. "The Isle of Tulipatan" will star Leah Huber, soprano; Zachary Dean Smith, tenor; Michael Goffus, tenor; Denver Perdomo, baritone; and Brienne Sharo, soprano!
Who are Thousand Bridges? Thousand Bridges Opera (TBO) is a 100% woman and queer-owned non-profit company founded in 2024 by Alicia Jayourba and Bridget Johnston. Our mission is to "build bridges" into the Pittsburgh community by making opera accessible, inclusive, and affirming for both artists and audiences.
Both operas in this year's double-bill are produced by co-founders Bridget Johnston and Alicia Jayourba.
Alicia Jayourba is an operatic soprano, President, and Co-founder of Thousand Bridges Opera. A graduate of Pittsburgh CAPA High School, she has performed extensively in the U.S. and Europe and studied at the Mannes College of Music and Florida State University.
Bridget Johnston is a mezzo-soprano, director, scenic painter, and Vice President and Co-founder of TBO. She is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and Iowa State University.
